Hell, one of the mayoral candidates ran a significant portion of his campaign on the "art gallery renovation vs. fixing potholes" issue (which, really, should be a non-issue). I have the feeling that people only really care about politics when it impedes their every-day lives. E.g. The only time I've ever heard people care about municipal politics is when the streets aren't getting cleared in the winter.
