A Call for Guest Posts

Posted in Uncategorized

I haven’t been posting much here recently. Partly, this is because of my own laziness. I have no good excuse for this. I will do my best to start posting regularly again, soon. However, I am wondering if people would like to write guest posts for River City Writer.

This is a blog about Edmonton, but it’s really only about my experience of Edmonton. I’d like it to be a blog about how other people experience Edmonton, as well.

If you’re interested in writing a guest post here, either as a one-off thing, or as a regular column, let me know.

List of Alberta Blogs

Posted in Uncategorized

I am a bad, bad blogger. I have not been posting nearly as often as I should be. I will try to remedy this. In the meantime, check out some of the Alberta/Edmonton blogs on the list fellow Edmonton-based blogger, Aaron Braaten, has put together.

Switching to Feedburner, Soon

Posted in Uncategorized

I just wanted to leave a quick note for all of my readers to let you know that I will soon be switching my RSS feed to a Feedburner feed. If you’re feed reader stops giving you updates in the next day or 2, it’s not because I haven’t been writing. It’s because the feed location has changed, so you’ll need to update your subscription.

Check back soon for the new feed location.

Update 03-12-2008: The new feed location is: http://feeds.feedburner.com/river-city-writer.

ESO Blog Night - Dispatch #3 (Percussion!)

Posted in Uncategorized

I’m fascinated by the percussion section in orchestras, particularly the guys who seem to only perform a few notes all night. There is strange sort of nobility about getting dressed-up in a tux, only to sit still at the back of orchestra for most of the night, waiting for your 30 seconds of drum-pounding glory.

This especially true when one considers that, if they’re doing their job right, you likely won’t even notice those 30 seconds. Or, rather, they won’t stand out as anything other than a seamless part of the whole performance. And, yet, without them, something would be noticeably amiss.

Down Time

Posted in Uncategorized

I’m moving to a new apartment today, and it may take the cable company a few days to transfer my services to the new apartment. Because of this, I may not be online until mid-week. If I can leech off of one of my neighbours’ wireless networks until my own services are reconnected, this won’t be an issue, but I don’t know if there are any networks that I’ll be able to connect with one the other side of the building.

So, it may take me a few days longer to get back to the regular publishing schedule here at River City Writer, but I have not forgotten about you, and I will be back to something resembling the old schedule in a few days.

The Best of 2007

Posted in Uncategorized

It’s the end of the year, and that means that it’s typically time for “Best of” lists.

Now, River City Writer hasn’t been around for a full year, yet, so it would be a bit silly to do a “Best Posts of 2007″ type post.

I could do something about the best festivals, or the best concerts, or anything like that. But, I’m not going to.

What I want to do, instead, is to ask you what you think were the best things to happen in Edmonton in 2007. What were the best plays you saw? The best concerts you attended? The best festivals?

Give your 5 “Best of Edmonton” items from any category you can think of. I’ll compile everything into a post in the near future, and credit everyone who contributed.

So, what do you think was the “Best of Edmonton” in 2007?

River City Tumblelog

Posted in Uncategorized

I recently created a tumblelog at Tumblr.com. For the uninitiated, a tumblelog is essentially a place to dump links, videos, and the occasional quick blog post. It’s not quite blogging, but it’s not quite microblogging, either. For lack of a better description, it’s somewhere between WordPress and Twitter.

I mention this because, while my tumblelog isn’t specifically about Edmonton, and isn’t going to be directly connected to River City Writer, it’s very likely that I’ll be posting a lot of links that do relate to Edmonton in some way.

If I see an interesting story in the Journal, for example, but haven’t formed a strong enough opinion to write a complete blog post here, I’ll probably toss the link onto the tumblelog.

As I said, the tumblelog won’t be directly connected to River City Writer, and will not be focused solely on Edmonton, but there will likely be some supplementary reading that you may find interesting.

Subscribe if you’re interested. If not, feel free to ignore this post.

November Snow

Posted in Uncategorized

It’s late November, and we’ve finally had some flurries.

There were a few snowflakes earlier in the month, but they didn’t stay around for long.

This time, it looks like it might stick.

While this city can get pretty dirty in the winter—sloppy and slushy—it’s also pretty beautiful, especially in the areas that cars don’t touch.

Sure, the roads get messy, but the river valley looks great in the winter.

Residential areas take on a special character in the winter, covered in snow and nostalgia. This is especially true in the early morning, or late at night, when the homes are all asleep, and the world is silent.

Winter is here, Edmonton. Bundle up, stay warm, and don’t forget to take it easy on the roads.

Join the River City Writer Facebook Group

Posted in Uncategorized

If you’re on Facebook, join River City Writers: The Edmonton Life & Culture Group (Facebook account required). The group is open to anyone, though, like this blog, it’s geared mostly toward Edmontonians.

As much as the group is meant to be a bit of a promotional vehicle for River City Writer, it’s main goal is to create a community within the Edmonton blogging community, and Edmonton’s online population in general.

Creating the group on Facebook, instead of on a web forum, or other social media tool may have been a poor choice, since there are still a few people who haven’t joined Facebook, but the ease of use really makes the Facebook group an ideal way to communicate with the community, and to allow the community to interact online.

Hopefully, a solid community will form, and will enrich the experience of living in Edmonton for all those involved (both through interacting with our community, albeit on the Internet, and through sharing information regarding cultural events happening in and around the city).

If you have a blog about Edmonton, or even if you just want to read the words of Edmonton’s blogging community, check out the River City Writer Facebook Group.

How Do You Feel About the Edmonton Police Service?

Posted in Uncategorized

Today’s post is a question for all of you: what do you think about Edmonton’s police service?

That’s it. It’s really that simple. I will update this post with my own opinions later, but I want to give you an opportunity to post your opinions before I bias you with my own views.

I doubt many of your will change your opinions just because you’ve read mine, but I’d rather avoid creating any sort of unintentional bias.

Once again, then, how do you feel about the Edmonton Police Service?

My opinion after the break.
