Ask the Readers…Favourite Restaurants
I have a few family issues going on right now, so I haven’t been able to write a post for today. Instead, I’ll just pose a question for all of your: what are your favourite Edmonton restaurants? Any details you want to give—favourite dishes, average prices of a meal, etc.—would be great.
Hopefully, I’ll be back to posting as usual in a day or two.

For those unaware: the “S” in El Rancho stands for “Spanish.” They do primarily Mexican and El Salvadorian food.

@Rosemary: Thanks for the input. Any additional details (address, why you like the place, etc.) would be great if you have the time.

Don’t think my choices qualify as “high quality dining”, but hey, you did ask.
Dadeo - Whyte & 105 Street. Great ambiance, great poboy sandwiches. The sweet potato fries are heavenly.
Route 99 Diner - 99 Street & 88 Avenue. The best greasy spoon in Edmonton. Best fries anywhere. No surprises on the menu - burgers, sammys, typical breakie fare. The place oozes charm and the waitresses are the best.
Doan’s - 104 Street, 80th Avenue. Fantastic Vietnamese food. And pretty cheap, too.
Capital Pizza (Londondale location) - 144 avenue and 76th street. Best pizza I’ve ever tasted. capitalpizza.ca
I’ll second the High Level Diner - their homemade ketchup is fucking incredible.

Hey Mike, I’m not necessarily looking for fancy dining, I’m just looking for good food. And, frankly, I have to agree with everyone of your choices, although I’m more of a Dickinsfield man when it comes to Capital Pizza (mostly because I grew up a stone’s throw away) - 144 Ave and 94 Street (911 Dickinsfield Mall).

Taste of Ukraine - Jasper and 122nd. Best authentic Ukrainian food I’ve been able to find in the city. The pedhe is Warm and soft, not doughy and tough like a bag of Cheemos. The staff is Ukrainian so you can order holubsti and they’ll bring you the correct dish. Servers are prompt and attentive. Bring a Ukrainian girl here and I’m sure she’ll practically melt.
Dinner for two with glass of wine and dessert: ~$70. http://www.tasteofukraine.com/

Err… “melt in your arms” was what I was going for. What I wrote doesn’t make too much sense.

Hey Scott, thanks for the info. I’ve driven past Taste of Ukraine a few times, and always kind of laughed at the slightly tacky decorations on the exterior of the building. But, after reading your description, and looking at the website, I think I may just have to check it out. I’ve got someone who needs to be shown what authentic Ukrainian food is all about, so I may go for dinner there in the near future.

one of my favourite places here is the thai orchard, on gateway boulevard (across the road from the ama). it looks shoddy from the outside, but it’s seriously the best thai food i’ve had. while one of the servers there bows after any interaction with his customers, the best thing about the place is its spectacular food: perfect coconut rice, stir fries i could eat every day, curries that ooze with flavour and zest, pad thai with delicious crispy tofu (yes, they’ll replace the meat in just about anything with tofu if you ask)… i can practically taste it now.

Thanks for the tip, Pragya. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed that place before. But, then again, I’m not that far south very often.

Aaron, thanks for reminding me of La Shish! I love that place, but it kind of slipped off my radar these last few months. Considering how close it is to my apartment (it’s only about 5 blocks away), I’m surprised I don’t eat there more often. I’ll have to make a point of walking over there once this cold-snap ends.

Some of our faves include:
Tropika Malay/Thai cuisine 149st and Stony Plain Road by the London Drugs. Amazing curries, noodles, soups, salads. Closest I’ve come to REAL Singaporean food since being there.
Matahari 124th Street at the end of Jasper Ave. Sort of Asian fusion, Indian, Malay, Thai. Great food, you can have dinner, appie for two under $40. http://www.matahari-asiandining.com/
Mikado - simply the best sushi ever. I’ve been going to Mikado since it was a tiny little place on 116st. http://www.mikadorestaurant.com/home.html Sushi that’s right up there with that I ate in Asia. Mostly Japanese guys cooking, I know my student from Tokyo got a job there.
4th and Vine, wine bar 11358 104th Ave, http://www.4thandvine.ca/. We go there for wine tastings/food pairings and they have movie night where you can watch a movie while you have dinner and wine. Always great wine choices. Staff is great, ambience is fantastic. I happen to also have my art up there right now.
Khazana Indian restaurant, 107 st and about 103 Ave. http://www.khazana.ab.ca/test.htm - great lunch buffet for $10 or $15 (can’t remember). A bit on the pricey side for dinner though - last time was $80 for two of us.
